The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has held formal discussions with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to explore the expansion of Maldivian fisheries products within the Japanese market.
The meeting, conducted at JETRO’s headquarters in Tokyo, is part of MIFCO's ongoing visit to Japan aimed at strengthening bilateral commercial ties.
The dialogue focused on identifying strategic opportunities to increase MIFCO’s market presence and determining specific areas where JETRO, a government-related body tasked with promoting mutual trade and investment, can provide technical and logistical support. These efforts aim to improve market access for Maldivian tuna, with Japan remaining one of the world’s major importers.
MIFCO was represented at the high-level talks by Strategic Consultant Athif Shakoor and Corporate Affairs General Manager Aminath Saniyya Shareef. The delegation was joined by officials from the Maldives Embassy in Japan, including Deputy Ambassador Ahmed Adil and Second Secretary Hawwa Samha, highlighting the diplomatic weight behind the trade negotiations.
Japan has historically been a foundational partner in the development of the Maldivian fisheries sector.
