A solar–diesel hybrid energy system has been established in Baa Kamadhoo under the Government’s Preparing Outer Islands for Sustainable Energy Development (POISED) project.
According to the Fenaka Corporation, the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems on the island has now been successfully completed in efforts to expand environmentally sustainable electricity generation across the Maldives.
Under the project, 198 kilowatts of solar PV capacity have been installed on the rooftops of Kamadhoo School and the Fenaka powerhouse on the island. In addition, a 160-kilowatt battery energy storage system has been set up to support the hybrid power system.
The initiative forms part of the Government’s efforts to promote clean and sustainable energy solutions in outer islands, reducing reliance on fossil fuels while improving energy efficiency. Hybrid solar–diesel–battery systems have already been installed in more than 100 islands across the Maldives under the POISED programme.
The project also supports the Administration’s national energy target of generating 33 per cent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
The POISED programme aims to strengthen sustainable energy development in outer islands while reducing the Maldives’ dependence on imported fuel and lowering energy costs over the long term.
