Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam has highlighted the Government’s efforts to create a comprehensive fishermen’s registry as a key step in attracting young people to the fishing industry.
Speaking during a panel discussion at the 'Masveringe Gunzaru' event, held in celebration of Fishermen’s Day, the minister emphasised the importance of formalising the status of fishermen to improve their access to opportunities.
The minister noted that many youth avoid the fishing industry due to challenges in accessing loans from banks. He explained that without formal recognition as registered employers, fishermen struggle to qualify for financial support. The introduction of the registry aims to address this issue, enabling fishermen to access loans and other financial benefits.
Minister Shiyam also stated that the registry would instill a sense of pride in the fishing profession among young people. He confirmed that 90 per cent of vessels with fishing licences are already registered, a significant milestone toward ensuring social security for fishermen.
The 'Masveringe Gunzaru', which runs from December 11 to 13, brings together 43 fishermen from 22 islands and representatives from eight fish processing companies. The event serves as a platform for discussing industry concerns and exploring solutions.
Fishermen’s Day is celebrated annually on December 10, with this year’s official ceremony scheduled at Dharubaaruge on December 13.
