The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has announced a 60-day grace period for electric vehicle (EV) owners to switch to new green number plates, following the implementation of the seventh amendment to the Road Traffic Regulations on Tuesday.
Under the revised rules, all private electric vehicles must be fitted with green number plates bearing white lettering within two months.
The amendment also introduces a colour-coded system to distinguish different vehicle categories. Commercial EVs will use green plates with yellow lettering, consular vehicles will carry blue plates with white lettering, while standard commercial vehicles will use yellow plates with black lettering.
The Ministry stated that the changes are aimed at improving the identification of electric vehicles, in line with ongoing Government efforts to promote a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system.
In addition to the number plate changes, the amendment includes measures to streamline the registration process for heavy vehicles as part of wider efforts to modernise the national transport framework.
As part of these initiatives, the Government is also preparing to introduce a 24-hour taxi service on Eid. The service, to be operated by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), will begin with a fleet of 150 electric vehicles.
