Fire that broke out in Maafannu

The Elections Commission (EC) has confirmed that the fire at the Prime Fertilizers warehouse on Wednesday evening will not disrupt the three elections scheduled for April 4.

Speaking to State media, EC President Mohamed Zahid said preparations remain on track for the Local Council elections, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and the public referendum.

Although the fire occurred near the building housing the Elections Centre, Zahid confirmed that all sensitive documents and election materials were secured.

He noted that while the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has brought the fire under control, the operations centre remains temporarily inaccessible. As a result, election-related administrative work has been relocated to a Social Centre until clearance is granted to resume operations at the main facility.

The relocation has briefly halted the signing of the final voters’ list by candidates and their representatives. However, Zahid stated that the process will resume at the Social Centre from Thursday.
