The Government has announced plans to expand Girifushi, the primary training centre for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), to enhance military training capabilities.
The decision was unveiled by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his address at the Victory Day function, where he highlighted the pressing need for more resources and space at the facility.
President Dr Muizzu acknowledged that Girifushi is currently facing challenges due to limited space and depleted resources. To address this, he stated that the process of redesigning the centre and preparing a comprehensive plan for its expansion has already commenced. He specifically mentioned plans to reclaim 13 hectares from the lake adjacent to Girifushi, emphasising that this additional space will be crucial for enhancing the training programmes offered.
As part of the expansion project, President Dr Muizzu indicated that a new port would be constructed, aligning with the Government's policy initiatives for the upcoming year. The additional facilities will not only bolster the armed forces' operational capabilities but also support the forthcoming national service programme, which aims to train young Maldivians and provide them with essential skills.
The President underscored the strategic importance of this project for strengthening national security, asserting that the expanded training centre will significantly benefit the armed forces. With the Government's commitment to improving resources and training facilities, the initiative promises to equip military personnel with the necessary tools to ensure the safety and security of the nation.
