President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a series of infrastructure projects aimed at expanding sports and recreational facilities across the Maldives.
Speaking at a youth engagement session on Saturday, President Dr Muizzu said the Government is working to establish indoor sports complexes on islands with populations exceeding 3,000. He noted that several projects are already underway, with some expected to be completed within this year and the remainder by 2027.
In the Greater Malé Area, the Government is prioritising the development of key recreational facilities, including dedicated futsal and netball complexes. The President also confirmed that a new skate park arena in Hulhumalé has been completed and is expected to open soon.
He also highlighted plans for a multi-storey futsal stadium in Hulhumalé, for which financing has already been secured. The facility will include four futsal practice pitches and seating for more than 2,000 spectators. The President assured that these projects will continue despite austerity measures linked to global economic conditions and tensions in the Middle East.
Additional projects under the Government’s plan include a 10-lane bowling facility with private event spaces and a cafeteria, with construction scheduled to begin in the second quarter of this year. An agreement for a new arcade centre is also nearing finalisation, while an e-games stadium is planned for Sultan Park at the site previously allocated for a snow park.
President Dr Muizzu further noted that work is planned to develop a surfing stadium and to reclaim land near the Hulhumalé highway for a dedicated racing and drifting track.
The President reiterated that his Administration is committed to empowering youth socially, economically and politically.
