President Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the Malé Taxi Line service.

The inauguration ceremony was held on Thursday evening at Hulhumalé Central Park, where the President was accompanied by First Lady Sajidha Mohamed.

The Malé Taxi Line is an initiative launched under the President’s guidance to address longstanding challenges in the capital’s taxi services. Designed to provide a reliable and efficient transport solution, the service commenced operations today with round-the-clock availability.

The fleet comprises 150 environmentally friendly electric vehicles (EVs), including cars of three different sizes to accommodate varying passenger needs. Smaller vehicles have been designated for navigating Malé’s narrow streets, while larger vehicles are intended for greater passenger comfort. A dedicated hotline, 1655, has also been introduced to facilitate easy access to the service.

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of Maldives Transport and Contracting Company, DCP (Retired) Ahmed Saudee, described the initiative as a transformative development for the country’s transport system, noting its potential to modernise and streamline mobility across the capital.

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, also addressed the gathering, assuring that the introduction of the new service would not hinder existing taxi operators. He further revealed plans to expand the service to Addu City later this year.

Following the official inauguration, the President toured the vehicles designated for the taxi line, observing the features and capabilities of the new fleet.
