President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM) Dr Aishath Rameela has called on voters to exercise their right to vote freely and without interference, ahead of the Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections scheduled for tomorrow.

Speaking to State media, Dr Rameela said voting is a fundamental right and responsibility of every citizen, stressing that individuals should be able to cast their ballots for candidates of their choice without influence. She urged all parties to refrain from any actions that could interfere with the rights of voters and candidates or disrupt the electoral process.

She also emphasised the importance of participation in elections as part of strengthening democratic governance, noting that citizens play a key role in shaping the country’s future through their vote.

Dr Rameela further called for the well-being of the community to be prioritised during and after the voting process, urging the public to maintain respect and unity regardless of the outcome. She added that any disagreements arising from the elections should be resolved peacefully and within the legal framework.

The Human Rights Commission also appealed to relevant authorities to ensure that the right to vote is upheld, as preparations continue for the elections and the associated public vote.
