The People’s National Congress (PNC) secured a sweeping victory in Alifu Alifu Ukulhas in Saturday’s Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, in a result that saw the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) fail to win a single seat on the council for the first time.

The PNC won all three seats on the Ukulhas Council. Ali Waheed, who contested on a PNC ticket, was elected Council President. The remaining two seats were secured by Aminath Zoona, who won the women’s reserved seat, and Mohamed Shafraz.

The party also secured both seats in the Women’s Development Committee, extending its win across all local governance bodies on the island.

The outcome reflects a major shift in Ukulhas’ political landscape, ending the MDP’s long-standing presence in the council.
