The People’s National Congress (PNC) secured all seats of the Haa Alifu Baarah Council in Saturday’s Local Council elections.
The position of council president had been secured uncontested by PNC candidate Ali Shameem prior to the vote, with polling held for the remaining four member seats.
All four seats were won by PNC candidates, as voters delivered a majority in favour of the party across the island.
The Baarah Council had previously been led by a member of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which also fielded candidates for all four member positions in this election. However, none of its candidates were elected.
Although the PNC did not secure several city mayoral positions in Saturday’s polls, the party achieved strong results across many islands, winning a majority of council seats nationwide.
