The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), with assistance from the Maldives Police Service (MPS) and residents, has brought a major fire in Faafu Feeali under control.
The fire broke out on Thursday morning on a fuel boat moored at the Feeali harbour. It quickly intensified, spreading to nearby vessels and structures, including an ice plant and a fuel storage shed.
By the time the fire was contained, the island’s ice plant, two fishing vessels, and another boat had been destroyed. Police also confirmed that the fire spread to a fuel shed, damaging fuel dispensers and parts of the structure.
Residents reported heavy smoke across the island as the blaze continued. Feeali School was closed for the day, with students sent home after the interval as a precaution.
A Bangladeshi crew member from the fuel boat sustained serious burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment at the island’s health centre.
Authorities are continuing to assess the full extent of the damage.
