Gaadhiffushi land reclamation begins ---

Land reclamation work has commenced in Thaa Gaadhiffushi, with 11 hectares of land to be reclaimed under the project announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

In a post on X, the President said the project began on April 10 and will involve an estimated 396,000 cubic metres of sand, with completion expected within 10 days. The reclamation is being carried out by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) using the trailing suction hopper dredger Filippo Brunelleschi, which has a capacity of approximately 11,500 cubic metres.

The project, valued at MVR 110.5 million, also includes coastal protection works such as a 100-metre breakwater, a 704-metre revetment and a 100-metre groyne, aimed at supporting long-term island protection and expansion.

The Government has stated that the initiative will help address land constraints and contribute to the island’s socio-economic development. The project follows a pledge made by the President during a previous visit to the island.
