Efforts are underway by the Ungoofaaru Council to increase its annual income from land leases to MVR 4.2 million, according to the council's president, Abdulla Rasheed.
Speaking on PSM News, he stated that the easiest way for the council to increase its revenue is by leasing out land. Currently, the council earns MVR 2.4 million annually from leasing 10 plots of land. For the next financial year, additional leases are projected to bring in an extra MVR 1.8 million, pushing the total to the targeted figure.
The council plans to lease land for local tourism and other economic activities, expanding opportunities for revenue generation. Further plans include utilising nearby areas, such as Raa Ungulu, for activities like fibre production, fishing, and farming, which are expected to empower the local community and enhance economic growth.
The initiative follows a policy change allowing councils to engage in economic activities outside their jurisdiction. This decision, implemented under the current Administration, has enabled councils like Ungoofaaru to explore new revenue streams, including industrial development.
