Final results of the April 4 local council elections show that the People’s National Congress (PNC) secured council presidencies across 10 atolls, reinforcing its presence at the island level.

The Elections Commission data show that PNC candidates were elected as council presidents in multiple islands across Haa Alifu, Raa, Alifu Alifu, Alifu Dhaalu, Vaavu, Faafu, Laamu, Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls.

These include seven islands in Haa Alifu, six in Raa, seven in Alifu Alifu, five in Alifu Dhaalu, three each in Vaavu and Faafu, six in Laamu, five in Gaafu Alifu and four in Gaafu Dhaalu, reflecting strong support across island constituencies.

Overall, PNC candidates were elected as presidents of 75 island councils, compared to 74 secured by the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), while 24 independent candidates were also elected. One seat each was won by candidates from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) and the Jumhooree Party.

While MDP secured council presidencies in seven atolls and shared results with PNC in two atolls, the outcome highlights PNC’s broad reach across the atolls and its continued strength at the grassroots level.
