Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has assured that essential commodities will remain available in the Maldives, as the Government continues measures to manage supply amid global disruptions.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, Minister Saeed said the ministry is focused on monitoring price changes in the market while ensuring uninterrupted access to basic goods and services. He noted that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, have impacted global supply chains, but efforts are underway to prevent shortages in the domestic market.
The minister outlined scheduled shipments of key commodities, stating that petrol consignments are expected to arrive on April 20, May 8, May 26 and June 14, while diesel shipments are due on April 17, April 30, May 7 and May 15. Essential food items, including sugar and flour, are also scheduled for delivery on April 14, 16, 26 and 28.
Minister Saeed further noted that imports have increased by 19 per cent during the first quarter, with goods worth MVR 16.2 billion brought into the country compared to MVR 13.6 billion in the same period last year, reflecting sustained demand despite logistical challenges.
Providing an update on cargo operations, the minister said progress has been made in clearing containers previously stranded in Sri Lanka, with numbers expected to decrease from 4,241 to 1,741 as incoming vessels arrive. He added that improvements are also being seen in the air cargo sector with the resumption of certain flights, contributing to more stable supply conditions.
