The ‘Empowering Women Entrepreneurs through Digital Transformation’ programme was officially inaugurated on December 14, 2024, in a ceremony graced by Second Lady Aishath Afreen Mohamed.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham, highlighted that the programme represents a significant step towards advancing women’s economic empowerment in the Maldives. The initiative aims to equip 100 women entrepreneurs with essential digital skills to transform their businesses.

This programme is part of the Government’s broader commitment to supporting women-led businesses, including an allocation of MVR 100 million in loans, with 25 per cent reserved for women with disabilities. The Minister noted that 60 applicants have already been selected for funding under this initiative.

The Minister emphasised the critical role of digital literacy in fostering economic participation and resilience, particularly for women in today’s increasingly interconnected world. Additionally, the Minister underscored the significance of women’s contributions in addressing the challenges posed by an ageing population.

This programme, organised by the Ministry of Social and Family Development in collaboration with the Asian and Pacific Training Centre for ICT for Development (APCICT), will run from 14 to 16 December 2024.
