Member of Parliament Hassan Zareer has accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of calling for an interim government in an attempt to create unrest in the country.

Senior MDP figures, including former President Mohamed Nasheed, have recently proposed the formation of an all-party transitional government, arguing that it is necessary to implement fundamental reforms and ensure free and fair elections.

Responding to these calls, Zareer said there was no justification for establishing an interim administration, stating that the Maldives is not facing a situation that requires such a move.

He further alleged that the proposal is a political strategy aimed at diverting public attention ahead of the 2028 presidential election, claiming the opposition is aware it cannot secure victory through the current system.

Zareer emphasised that while the opposition is responsible for holding the Government accountable, such efforts should be based on facts.

Addressing the MDP’s claims of success in the recent Local Council and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, Zareer said the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) secured the majority of votes and seats, and therefore achieved the overall victory.
