Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources Ahmed Shiyam, has stated that the Government is continuing to manage fuel-related matters in a way that does not place a burden on local fishermen.

The Minister made the remarks in response to a news report by a local outlet claiming that fishermen are unable to access fuel at affordable prices following tensions in the Middle East.

In a post on his official X account, Minister Shiyam said the report was not accurate, noting that even under current challenges, the Government is ensuring that Maldivian fishermen are able to continue going out to sea.

He stated that despite the sharp rise in global fuel prices, the Government has maintained measures to shield fishermen from increased costs. He added that fishermen themselves have expressed appreciation for these efforts.

Minister Shiyam also urged media outlets to assess the situation carefully when reporting, highlighting that after a period of difficulties in securing bait, conditions are now beginning to improve across the country, with the fisheries sector showing signs of recovery.

He noted that efforts are ongoing to deploy vessels to productive fishing areas, while the Government continues to closely monitor the situation and provide support to fishermen. Work is also underway in consultation with industry stakeholders to address challenges faced by companies operating in the sector.

Amid global oil price fluctuations linked to Middle East tensions, the State Trading Organization (STO) had earlier decided to revise fuel prices for businesses. This led to adjustments by the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) in fuel prices at its fish purchasing centres and from its vessels.

However, following a revision of STO’s decision, arrangements have been put in place to ensure fishermen continue to receive fuel at subsidised rates under the Government’s Fahi Hakatha programme. As a result, MIFCO has maintained previous fuel prices for fishermen.

MIFCO stated that diesel will be sold to fishing vessels at MVR 16.54 per litre, and at MVR 16.04 per litre for purchases exceeding three tonnes. Diesel sold to the general public will be priced at MVR 17.54 per litre.
