President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that Women's Development Committee (WDC) members will begin receiving a Ramadan allowance starting next year, during a public address in Dhan'gethi, South Ari Atoll.

This is a significant step in addressing long-standing grievances voiced by WDC members regarding inadequate financial recognition and support.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the current legal framework has contributed to unfair treatment of WDC members. He assured that the Government is committed to resolving these issues through extensive research and consultation.

To that end, he revealed plans to propose amendments to the Decentralisation Act and Employment Act when Parliament reconvenes. These amendments will not only formalise the Ramadan allowance but also secure proper salaries for WDC members and improve their access to financial schemes.

The first Ramadan allowance is expected to coincide with the upcoming holy month.

In addition to the announcement about WDC allowances, the President discussed other legislative measures, including the newly ratified Foreign Currency Bill, which allows dollar transactions and doubles credit card limits, promising greater economic flexibility for citizens.

He also outlined plans for amendments to allocate a portion of local tourism revenue directly to councils, enhancing their financial independence.
