Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stressed the importance of responsible journalism and mutual respect, stating that freedom of expression must be exercised with accountability.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the President’s Office, minister Saeed made the remarks in response to a question on press freedom in the Maldives. He said the country maintains a broad space for media expression, noting that newspapers are able to report freely, but emphasised the need for responsible reporting practices.
Minister Saeed highlighted that while journalists have the right to report, individuals who are the subject of news coverage also have rights that must be respected. He condemned content published by some outlets targeting the President and his family, stating that such practices fall below acceptable professional standards.
The minister further said that Maldivian society must uphold respect in the exercise of freedom, noting that actions which harm reputations or affect families reflect a need to reassess how freedom is understood and practised.
He added that the Maldives provides space to address a wide range of issues, including socio-economic and infrastructural matters, and that journalism and public expression remain integral to national development. Minister Saeed also expressed concern over conduct observed at certain rallies, reiterating the importance of maintaining appropriate standards of behaviour.
