The Ministry of Health, Family and Welfare has carried out inspections at 308 locations across the Greater Malé area as part of ongoing efforts to control mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases.

The operation was led by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in collaboration with the Malé City Council, Housing Development Corporation (HDC), Maldivian Red Crescent, Hulhumalé Hospital, and Villimale’ Hospital.

The inspections were conducted between 19 and 23 April.

According to the Ministry, the exercise covered construction sites, residential buildings, and vacant properties. A total of 308 premises were inspected, including 153 in Malé, 83 in Hulhumalé, 59 in Villimale’, 12 in Gulhifalhu, and one in Thilafushi.

During the inspections, several potential mosquito breeding sites were identified and cleared. The Ministry said the highest concentration of breeding grounds was found in stagnant water containers, barrels and tanks, as well as in construction materials, tyres and plastic waste.

The main objective of the initiative is to identify and eliminate mosquito breeding sites to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases.

The Ministry said similar inspections will continue in the future to help maintain a safer environment for the public.

It also urged the public to play an active role by removing stagnant water, keeping surroundings clean, and ensuring that potential breeding sites are eliminated at both household and community levels.
