IOTC meeting 2025 --
The Maldives is set to host the 30th session of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission later this month, representing a significant milestone for the country’s fisheries sector.
The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources stated that the meeting will take place from 4 to 15 May in Malé, bringing together more than 200 delegates, including representatives from Indian Ocean member states, fisheries experts and senior officials from around the world.
The Ministry addded that hosting the session presents an important opportunity to strengthen the Maldives’ role in the international fisheries arena, while further advancing the development of the national fisheries industry.
Officials noted that the decision to host the meeting reflects ongoing efforts by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration to enhance the fisheries sector. They added that the Government’s commitment is further demonstrated by its decision to bear all costs associated with hosting the event.
In addition to the main commission meeting, several key committee sessions will also be held in the Maldives. These include the 23rd meeting of the Compliance Committee, the 23rd session of the Administration and Finance Committee, and the 10th session of the Technical Committee on Management Procedures.
This will be the first time the Maldives hosts a meeting of the Commission.
The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission is a regional fisheries management organisation responsible for the conservation and sustainable use of tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean. Its decisions cover measures such as sustainable stock management, catch limits and the advancement of scientific research.
The Ministry noted that outcomes from the meeting are expected to support the long-term sustainability of tuna stocks and enhance the benefits of the fisheries sector for future generations.
