President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has highlighted the role of responsible journalism in ensuring transparency, accountability and public access to information.

In a message on World Press Freedom Day, the President extended greetings to media professionals and acknowledged their contribution to informing the public, noting that the media plays a key role in linking State institutions within the democratic framework.

He said freedom of expression remains a protected right, but emphasised that it must be exercised with responsibility. He noted the need to uphold ethical standards, protect public interest and ensure that expression does not undermine social stability or individual dignity.

The President further stated that creating a supportive environment for journalists has been a priority of the Administration, adding that efforts are ongoing to strengthen the media sector through improved access to information and broader public engagement.

He also pointed to the growing influence of technology on journalism, noting that initiatives under the Maldives 2.0 agenda aim to support a more developed and responsive information landscape. The President said such efforts are intended to support the long-term growth of the sector and encourage a more skilled and adaptable media workforce.

Concluding his message, he urged journalists to maintain accuracy, impartiality and professionalism in their work, while reaffirming the Government’s commitment to supporting a free and independent press.
