Maldives Police Service has stated that efforts will continue to improve areas highlighted in the 2025 annual report of the National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) published by the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives.
In a statement issued following the release of the report, police acknowledged the role played by independent institutions in strengthening accountability, promoting transparency and protecting human rights. Police also highlighted the importance of monitoring work carried out under the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
According to police, the issues identified in the report concern broader systemic challenges and should not be interpreted as matters relating solely to one institution. The statement further noted that the findings contained in the report are intended as guidance and recommendations for corrective measures rather than legal conclusions establishing misconduct or criminal wrongdoing.
Police also expressed concern over what it described as the misinterpretation of certain language used in reporting on the findings. The statement noted that some coverage had failed to adequately consider the purpose of the report, the broader context of the findings, as well as operational and resource-related challenges faced by institutions. Police stressed the importance of disseminating information responsibly and accurately to the public.
The service assured that it would continue working closely with HRCM and other relevant stakeholders to improve the quality of services highlighted in the report and ensure that services are aligned with national laws and international standards.
