First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has emphasised the importance of improving public awareness and encouraging early treatment for asthma and other respiratory illnesses in the Maldives.

Speaking at the opening of the World Asthma Day 2026 Symposium held at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the First Lady noted that asthma remains a common respiratory condition in the Maldives, particularly among children, with many patients continuing to seek treatment only after conditions become severe.

She highlighted the impact of pollution, poor air quality and changing weather patterns on respiratory health, noting that such environmental factors continue to contribute to the growing prevalence of asthma and related illnesses. The First Lady also pointed to conditions such as allergies, eczema and atopy as contributing factors commonly seen in the Maldives.

Referring to this year’s World Asthma Day theme, “Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma – Still an urgent need,” the First Lady called for greater understanding regarding inhaler use and urged society to move away from misconceptions surrounding asthma treatment. She stressed that inhalers are safe, effective and help improve quality of life for patients.

The First Lady further stated that society should work towards ensuring every child has the opportunity to live a healthy life and pursue their aspirations without limitations caused by respiratory illness. She also called for a more compassionate approach towards individuals living with asthma and other breathing-related conditions.

Highlighting recent progress in healthcare services, the First Lady noted the introduction of specialised services including tobacco cessation clinics and sleep laboratories as part of efforts to strengthen respiratory healthcare in the Maldives. She concluded by expressing hope that the symposium would help encourage stronger public awareness and meaningful action on respiratory health.
