President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has affirmed that all citizens should be able to openly voice their concerns and opinions to him without restriction.
The President made the remarks during the press briefing held today while responding to questions regarding reports alleging that Sri Lankan police had visited residences of Maldivians in Sri Lanka during his recent visit to the country between May 3 and 6. Some media outlets had claimed the actions were carried out following requests made by Maldivian Ambassador to Sri Lanka.
Responding to the allegations, President Dr Muizzu said he had directly inquired with the ambassador regarding the matter and that the ambassador denied requesting Sri Lankan authorities to prevent Maldivians from attending meetings held during the visit. He added that the security attaché at the Maldivian Embassy in Sri Lanka had also been instructed to look into the issue.
The President further stated that no request had been made on behalf of the Maldivian Government to restrict individuals from meeting or expressing their views to him. He noted that throughout his political career he had consistently engaged with members of the public, including those expressing criticism or dissatisfaction.
President Dr Muizzu said he believes citizens should be allowed to openly share their opinions and assured that he would not support any actions intended to prevent individuals from expressing their views regarding him or his administration.
