Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel met with the UN Resident Coordinator ad interim, Neils Scott, on 16 December 2024, to discuss the long-standing partnership between the Maldives and the United Nations.
On his official X account, Minister Dr Khaleel expressed his gratitude for the UN's instrumental role in supporting the Maldives’ development journey over the decades. He underscored the importance of sustained collaboration, particularly as the Maldives approaches the 60th anniversary of its UN membership.
The UN echoed these sentiments, reaffirming its commitment to further strengthening the partnership with the Maldives. It emphasised the significance of working collaboratively to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Maldives' UN membership and expressed enthusiasm for continuing joint efforts to advance the nation’s development goals.
Since formally becoming a member of the United Nations in September 21, 1965, the Maldives and the UN have shared a strong and impactful partnership. In the early years following independence, the UN provided essential development assistance that played a key role in the country’s progress.
Over the decades, the Maldives has demonstrated remarkable leadership on the global stage, championing issues such as climate action, protection of human rights, and strengthening multilateral cooperation.
