Tentative results show that People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Suha Ibrahim has won Saturday's re-election for the position of President of the Dhaalu Meedhoo Council.
Suha defeated Maldives Development Alliance (MDA) candidate Mohamed Shaahid, securing 529 votes against Shaahid's 449 votes.
The re-election was held following a court ruling related to the Local Council Elections held on 4 April. The court determined that a ballot cast at the Dhaalu Meedhoo-2 polling station should be deemed valid. The decision resulted in a tie among candidates for the votes required to elect the Council President, necessitating a fresh vote for the position.
With Suha's victory, the PNC has further strengthened its lead in the Local Council Elections. The party has now secured 585 council seats, compared to 563 seats won by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The latest result also brings the number of council president positions won by the PNC to 76, while the MDP has secured 73 council president seats.
