President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said the Government will continue expanding rehabilitation services and strengthening measures to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking, describing the issue as a social, economic, moral and national security challenge for the Maldives.

In a message on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the President said three new rehabilitation centres offering full treatment and recovery services are expected to open later this year. He said the Government is also working to improve the country's response to drug-related offences through recent legal reforms, including stronger coordination among relevant authorities and tougher action against drug trafficking.

President Dr Muizzu  further said the Maldives will continue working with regional and international partners to respond to new challenges posed by the illegal drug trade, including the emergence of new psychoactive substances and changing trafficking methods.

Calling for broader public participation, the President urged families, communities, civil society organisations and the private sector to play a greater role in preventing drug abuse and supporting rehabilitation efforts.

The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed annually on 26 June. This year's theme is "World drug problem: persisting issues, new challenges, innovative responses."
