The Government has completed waste management centres in 21 islands while work continues to establish modern waste management centres in 135 islands as part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's pledge to introduce modern waste management systems across the Maldives.
Information shared with MMTV by the Ministry of Environment shows that waste management systems at seven existing centres have been upgraded and brought into operation in recent months. The upgraded centres are located in Faafu Magoodhoo, Faafu Nilandhoo, Dhaalu Rinbidhoo, Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Laamu Fonadhoo, Laamu Maamendhoo, and Meemu Dhiggaru.
In addition to the upgraded facilities, new waste management centres have been completed in 21 islands. These are Meemu Mulah, Meemu Muli, Meemu Kolhufushi, Thaa Buruni, Thaa Madifushi, Thaa Guraidhoo, Thaa Vandhoo, Thaa Thimarafushi, Thaa Kinbidhoo, Thaa Omadhoo, Laamu Dhanbidhoo, Laamu Gan, Shaviyani Milandhoo, Haa Dhaalu Hanimaadhoo, Shaviyani Komandoo, Haa Dhaalu Naivaadhoo, Alifu Alifu Himandhoo, Alifu Alifu Feridhoo, Alifu Alifu Thoddoo, Kaafu Huraa, and Kaafu Hinmafushi.
The ministry said work to establish waste management centres in 135 islands is progressing at a rapid pace.
The project is one of the Government's largest initiatives to strengthen waste management systems across the Maldives under President Dr Muizzu's Administration. During his presidential campaign visits to islands across the country, residents frequently raised concerns over the lack of proper waste management systems, making the issue one of the key pledges of his presidential campaign.
