Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has reported a sharp increase in sea-to-air cargo operations, with over 335 tonnes of cargo transported through the service in June.

MPL shared that a total of 65 TEUs of containerised cargo was processed during the month and shipped to seven countries through four international airlines. The service recorded a 102 per cent increase compared with the same period last year, when 162 tonnes of cargo were handled.

The airlines involved in the June operations were Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Saudia and Emirates, facilitating the onward transportation of cargo to international destinations.

Sea-to-air cargo enables goods arriving in the Maldives by sea to be transferred to air freight for faster delivery overseas. The service has been operated by MPL in partnership with Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) since its launch in May 2024.

MPL said the continued growth in sea-to-air cargo operations reflects the expanding role of the Maldives in international freight movement. The company added that the country's strategic location and connectivity through numerous international airlines provide significant opportunities to further develop the service and strengthen the Maldives' position as a regional logistics hub.
