President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has ratified the Organ Transplant Act, establishing the legal framework for organ transplant services in the Maldives.

The Act sets out the procedures governing human organ transplantation and defines the rights and responsibilities of donors, recipients and service providers. It also establishes two new bodies: the Organ Transplant Council, which will be appointed by the President to formulate national organ transplant policy, and the Organ Transplant Authorisation Committee, which will review and approve individual transplant applications.

In addition, the Act outlines the standards and procedures for organ transplantation and provides for offences and penalties related to transplants carried out in violation of the law.

The Bill was first passed by the 20th People's Majlis on 14 May 2026 and submitted to the President for ratification. It was returned to the Parliament for reconsideration on 31 May before being amended by the Committee on Social Affairs on 1 July. The revised Bill was passed again by the Majlis on 14 July.

The Act will come into force 180 days after its ratification and publication in the Government Gazette.
