President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has placed a strong emphasis on youth development in his message marking World Population Day, citing the pivotal role of younger generations in addressing the long-term challenges of an ageing population.
In a statement released on July 11, the President highlighted projections that show nearly 20 per cent of the Maldivian population will be over the age of 65 by 2062. In light of this, he reiterated his Administration’s commitment to investing in policies that empower the youth and safeguard the country’s future socio-economic stability.
The Government’s priorities include expanding access to quality education, healthcare, childcare, and affordable housing, along with introducing flexible working arrangements to support youth well-being. Strengthening reproductive health services and counselling was also identified as a key area to help young people make informed life decisions.
President Dr Muizzu also called for the development of a comprehensive population policy tailored to the Maldives’ evolving demographic landscape. He stressed the need for long-term planning to ensure the country is equipped to manage the pressures of an ageing society.
The President’s message was echoed on his official X account, where he reaffirmed the Government’s focus on building resilience through youth-centred reforms.
