A new water and sewerage system developed in Noonu Maafaru by Malé Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) has been officially inaugurated, enhancing access to essential services for the island’s residents.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu officiated the ceremony during his visit to Maafaru on July 21, following which he also met with local residents. The Government has prioritised the expansion of water and sanitation infrastructure, with a target to complete such systems in all inhabited islands by the end of the year.
The project in Maafaru includes a fully operational water production plant, water storage tanks, a facility building and sewage pumping stations. Household connections for both water supply and sewerage have been completed, alongside the provision of water testing and treatment equipment.
MWSC confirmed the technical groundwork has been finalised, ensuring the long-term reliability and safety of the service. The Government has allocated MVR 1.34 billion for the 20-island programme, aiming to raise health and living standards nationwide.
