Grant aid received by the Government so far this year has exceeded the amount projected in the 2026 State budget, the latest fiscal reports published by the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises show.

The ministry's weekly revenue and expenditure report shows that the Government had received MVR 438.8 million in grant aid as of 16 July. The figure exceeds both the MVR 373.6 million projected for the whole of 2026 in the State budget and the amount received during the same period last year.

During the corresponding period in 2025, the Government received MVR 190.5 million in grant aid. The amount received this year is 130.34 per cent higher than the same period last year, while also exceeding the full-year budget estimate by 17.45 per cent.

The MVR 373.6 million grant aid projection included in the 2026 budget was based on recommendations from international financial institutions, the Maldives Monetary Authority and the Auditor General's Office, taking into account grant aid received in previous years. The budget was prepared using a more conservative estimate following instances under previous administrations where higher grant projections were not realised, contributing to larger budget deficits and increased borrowing requirements.

The fiscal report also shows that the Government had received MVR 22.9 billion in total revenue and grant aid as of 16 July, compared with MVR 21 billion during the same period last year, an increase of 8.6 per cent.
