Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has resumed cargo operations after a temporary suspension caused by adverse weather conditions, successfully unloading 4,720 sacks of onions yesterday and last night.

MPL had halted operations earlier in the day due to poor weather, resulting in service delays and disruptions in supply. The company now estimates that an additional 3,840 sacks of onions will be unloaded today, helping to replenish market stocks.

The delays in unloading onion shipments have led to a noticeable scarcity and price hike in local markets over the past few weeks. Weekly weather-related disruptions have hampered the consistent flow of imports.

In response to the shortage and rising prices, the State Trading Organisation (STO) has also announced plans to bring in a shipment of onions soon to help stabilise the supply and ease consumer concerns.

The resumed operations and incoming shipments are expected to improve the availability of onions and alleviate pressure on prices in the coming days.
