President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the 75-housing unit project in Meemu Dhiggaru will be expanded, alongside a range of new development initiatives for the island.

Speaking to residents during his visit to the island, the President said the most important undertaking would be the housing project, which will commence this year. He confirmed that in addition to the 75 units already planned, another 75 units will be built, making this the first housing project in Dhiggaru.

The President also highlighted improvements in healthcare, noting that a 30-bed hospital project signed during his visit would significantly strengthen health services for the island.

Further infrastructure developments were also announced. Redevelopment of the harbour space and repairs to damaged areas are scheduled to begin early next year. Plans have also been made to construct a school building with nine additional classrooms and a multi-purpose hall. Work will soon commence on a football stadium, as well as fitness, recreation and volleyball facilities.

Turning to economic opportunities, President Dr Muizzu highlighted the importance of the fishing industry to Dhiggaru and Meemu Atoll. He assured residents that the Government will provide the necessary facilities for fishermen, including access to fuel and ice at lower prices. He also noted that the National Fishermen’s Register and loan schemes represent important opportunities being extended nationwide to support the sector.
