President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that 100 housing units currently under construction in Meemu Kolhufushi will be handed over by the end of this year, while another 100 units will be developed next year.
During his visit to the island, the President said the Government is working to complete utility services for the housing units within this year and will prioritise getting families into the homes as soon as possible. He also noted that the monthly payment for the housing units has been reduced from MVR 5,000 to MVR 3,333.
“This island needs more housing. I assure the people that 100 housing units will be started here in next year’s budget. Those who wish to build under this project on their own land will also be given the opportunity,” President Dr Muizzu said.
The President added that the road development initiative is closely tied to strengthening Kolhufushi’s infrastructure and economy. He also announced that a new generator will be installed to ease electricity shortages, and that the island’s school will be equipped with a library and a health room.
The President also pledged to enhance sports facilities by developing a football stadium and a handball court.
During the meeting, residents raised a number of concerns, including the need to expedite stalled tourism projects in the area. In response, President Dr Muizzu said he would review the relevant agreements and work to resolve the issues. Residents also requested easier opportunities for higher education without leaving the island, to which the President replied that discussions with relevant agencies were already underway to provide a solution.
