The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has highlighted the importance of nurturing Islamic leadership in the Maldives, grounded in the guidance and principles of Islam. He noted that building such leadership is a key component of the government’s long-term vision and development goals.
Speaking at the ceremony held to commemorate the 37th National Qur’an Competition, Dr Shaheem reflected on the spiritual and historical significance of Qur’an recitation in Maldivian society. He announced the government’s plan to launch a large-scale national initiative to further promote Qur’an recitation across the country, in conjunction with the upcoming 900th anniversary of the introduction of Islam to the Maldives.
The past year, 24 hafiz have been certified, and the Ministry aims to certify 50 hafiz in the coming year. As part of the Government’s religious education strategy, the target is to produce 500 hafiz and train 1,000 Islamic teachers ahead of the 900th anniversary milestone.
The Minister outlined plans to establish a generation of scholars capable of guiding society in accordance with Islamic values. He also emphasised the Government’s commitment to expanding access to Qur’an education by ensuring that every island is equipped with trained teachers and proper learning facilities.
As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Islamic education, the Government has introduced a scholarship scheme for outstanding Qur’an students to enable them to pursue higher Islamic studies abroad. This initiative is expected to cultivate a new generation of scholars who can contribute to the preservation and promotion of the nation’s Islamic identity.
Minister Dr Shaheem noted that while the Maldives has produced many individuals who have achieved excellence in Qur’anic studies, there remains a need to create sustainable opportunities for Islamic education and leadership development throughout the country.
