First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has officially launched the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) 2024-2029, emphasising the need for a collective effort to tackle this growing health threat. The new plan brings together various sectors to help strengthen the nation's health resilience.
In her speech at the launch, the First Lady highlighted the "One Health" approach, which links human, animal, and environmental health. This approach ensures a coordinated response to AMR, involving the healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sectors working together.
The First Lady also pointed out the significant link between AMR and food safety. She explained that the misuse of antimicrobials in agriculture and aquaculture can lead to resistant bacteria entering the food supply, putting public health and livelihoods at risk.
She stressed that addressing AMR is not just a health priority but also an economic necessity, as resistant infections can drive up healthcare costs and reduce productivity. The plan, which aligns with the World Health Organisation's Global Action Plan, focuses on improving governance, regulations, and monitoring systems to address gaps in AMR management.
Madam Sajidha Mohamed called for greater collaboration among stakeholders, encouraging the sharing of resources and knowledge to ensure the success of the One Health approach. The five-year plan represents a crucial step in the Maldives' efforts to combat AMR and protect future generations from its impact.
