Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has opened applications for drivers to operate the Government’s new taxi service, which is set to be launched in the Greater Malé Area as part of efforts to improve urban transport.

The company noted that a total of 407 drivers are required for the service, of which 122 slots are allocated for part-time drivers. MTCC stated that priority will be given to applicants already registered in the Taxi Drivers Register maintained by the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

The deadline for submitting applications is December, the company confirmed.

The Government is collaborating with MTCC to roll out the taxi line, which aims to address long-standing concerns over the limited availability of taxis in Malé, Hulhumalé, and Vilimalé. As part of the preparations, three plots of land in Hulhumalé have been designated for parking and operational support.

The new service will be operated using electric vehicles (EVs) and will include a dedicated ride-hailing application. MTCC said the platform will incorporate features commonly used in successful international transport services. The taxi line will function 24 hours a day to ensure consistent availability for commuters.

This initiative is expected to significantly ease transport challenges in the capital region by offering a reliable and modern taxi service.
