The Government has introduced a new round of financial assistance for couples seeking in vitro fertilisation (IVF) and intrauterine insemination (IUI).
The programme is administered by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) through the Fertility Care Trust Fund.
Under the latest funding round, 50 couples will receive support, selected through a points-based system that prioritises those most in need. Applications are open online via the OneGov portal until 20 December.
Eligibility criteria require couples to have been married for at least three years and to provide medical evidence confirming a natural infertility cause. Applicants must also demonstrate that IVF or IUI is the most appropriate treatment following unsuccessful fertility interventions.
Since its launch, the Fertility Care Trust Fund has supported numerous couples. Last year, the fund disbursed MVR 4.78 million for IVF treatments. By October 2025, this figure had risen to MVR 7.13 million, assisting 93 couples, with 23 achieving successful IVF outcomes, according to NSPA data.
This initiative forms part of a Government's strategy to strengthen fertility and maternal health services. Plans are underway to establish a new hospital in Hulhumalé Phase II, which will specialise in gynaecology, paediatric care, and advanced fertility treatments, including IVF and IUI. The hospital will also provide maternal care, family planning, neonatal services for premature infants, and screening for breast and cervical cancers. Design work for the facility is currently in progress.
