President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of the 281st Huravee Day, a day that commemorates one of the Maldives’ most significant historical victories.

In a message posted on X, the President reflected on the courage and sacrifice shown during the national resistance that safeguarded the Maldives from foreign occupation. He noted that the events remembered on Huravee Day mark a pivotal moment when Maldivians rose to defend their sovereignty, recalling the hardships endured and the determination that led to national liberation.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted that nearly three centuries later, the bravery, wisdom, and leadership of Dhon Bandaarain continue to be honoured and remembered across the country.

Huravee Day, observed annually on the third day of Jumad-ul-Akhirah in the Islamic calendar, pays tribute to Dhon Bandaarain’s leadership in expelling Malabari forces who invaded the Maldives in 1752. After months of resistance, his successful campaign restored Maldivian independence.

The day is named in recognition of Dhon Bandaarain’s origin from Huraa in Kaafu Atoll, reflecting his deep commitment to the nation. Following the victory, Maldivians offered him the crown, which he initially declined, choosing instead to temporarily administer the country in the national interest, a decision that underscored his humility and dedication.

He later assumed the throne after the passing of Sultan Mukarram Muhammad Imaduddin III, ruling until 1180 AH and leaving behind a legacy of patriotism and integrity.

Huravee Day serves not only as a remembrance of a defining historical triumph but also as a reminder of the enduring values of leadership, unity, and devotion to national independence.
