First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has described the initial-level electrical training course conducted by State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) for women as a programme that will bring positive changes to both households and society.

She made the remarks at the certificate awarding ceremony for the Beginners’ Electrician Course for Women, where 116 participants completed the programme.

In her speech, the First Lady noted that electrical work is not a field commonly pursued by women in the Maldives. She highlighted that data from relevant authorities show many fires are caused by electrical issues, and that a lack of basic knowledge has, in some cases, led to the loss of lives.

She said awareness is especially important as authorities continue to advise the public on measures that can help reduce electricity costs. The First Lady added that every household benefits when individuals are better informed about electricity use and safety.

Reflecting on the wider impact of the training, the First Lady said this initiative marks the beginning of a very positive change, as women gaining such skills can inspire children to develop similar interests. She added that when women understand electrical work, households are better equipped to choose the right equipment, ensure durability, and reduce costs.
