Former Minister of Agriculture Dr Aishath Rameela has been appointed as a member of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM).

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu presented her letter of appointment during a ceremony held at the President’s Office on Tuesday morning. Dr Rameela was also sworn into office at the ceremony, with the oath administered by Supreme Court Justice Dr Mohamed Ibrahim.

Parliament approved her appointment on 29 October. The position on the Commission became vacant following the expiry of the term of former HRCM member Mariyam Muna last Sunday.

Dr Rameela began her career in public service as a nurse in 1990 and later served twice as a State Minister at the Ministry of Health. She obtained a PhD in Social Science from Malaysia in 2010.

She was appointed Minister of Agriculture at the beginning of the current Administration, but later resigned due to health concerns.
