The Government has announced an increase in the monthly allowance for single parents, raising the payment to MVR 3,000 per child, fulfilling President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge.
The announcement was confirmed following the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA)’s publication of amendments to the regulation governing financial assistance for single parents.
Under the revised regulation, eligible single parents will receive MVR 3,000 per child for up to four children. For families with more than four children, each additional child will receive MVR 1,000 per month. The maximum support available to a single parent will be capped at MVR 15,000 per month, with the maximum annual income limit set at MVR 180,000 for eligibility.
The updated regulation is scheduled to come into effect on the first day of next month. President Dr Muizzu previously stated that the allowance increase will take practical effect from next year, adding that the initiative aims to improve financial stability for single-parent households and support child welfare.
The change follows continued calls for enhanced support measures for vulnerable families and forms part of the Government’s broader social protection agenda.
