Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim, travelled to Baa Thulhaadhoo to attend this year’s National Unity Day commemorations as the guest of honour.

The event, organised jointly by Thulhaadhoo Island Council and Raa Meedhoo Island Council, aims to strengthen ties between the two communities while honouring the spirit of national solidarity shown in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.

A group of 315 residents from Meedhoo, including children, youth and senior citizens, travelled to Thulhaadhoo to take part in the celebrations. Upon arrival, they were welcomed by the Minister, council officials and island residents, with banners, decorations and cultural displays set up across the island to receive the visitors. The programme aims to highlight solidarity between the two islands and reinforce the importance of social cohesion.

Activities organised for the two-day celebration include communal Fajr prayers, a special banquet in honour of the visiting delegation, tree-planting efforts to support environmental improvements, and cultural exchanges. Additional events have been arranged by the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage to celebrate the occasion.

National Unity Day is observed annually on 26 December to honour the unity shown by Maldivians in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami, which remains the most devastating national disaster in recent history. This year is the 21st anniversary of the observance, with prayer gatherings also planned to remember those who lost their lives and to reflect on the resilience of affected communities.
