More than 7,700 Maldivians are performing Umrah during the December–January holiday period, according to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
The Ministry stated that a total of 7,726 Maldivians are travelling to Mecca, while the final figure is expected to increase as some individuals are undertaking the pilgrimage independently rather than through registered travel packages.
Officials noted that independent travel for Umrah has become significantly easier in recent years, contributing to the rise in the number of Maldivians taking part in the pilgrimage. The Ministry described the growth as a positive trend, highlighting that participation has been increasing steadily when compared to previous years.
Arrangements for group travellers have been finalised, with the Ministry expressing confidence that all Maldivian pilgrims will complete their journeys within scheduled dates. Unlike in earlier periods, additional attention has been given to coordination and logistical planning to avoid administrative difficulties for travellers.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs said it will continue to monitor travel procedures throughout the holiday season to ensure smooth facilitation for pilgrims heading to Mecca.
