Dhidhdhoo MP Abdul Latheef Mohamed has said that electing People’s National Congress (PNC) candidates to island councils would support the uninterrupted continuation of development projects across the country.

Speaking on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, the MP said the upcoming Local Council Elections are important for ensuring councils work in alignment with the Government’s development agenda.

MP Abdul Latheef noted that while the Government intends to work closely with councils, some councils have taken politically driven approaches and have not cooperated with the Government, which he said has affected the progress of development projects in certain areas.

“Some councils are not cooperating with the Government and have cut off communication in matters related to delivering services that should reach the public,” he said.

The MP said smoother implementation of development projects would be possible with councils that work in alignment with the Government, adding that some councils have delayed projects by failing to hand over land required for development. He said that although the separation of powers must be respected, certain councils are engaging in political activity instead of focusing on municipal duties and development work.

Abdul Latheef also said preparations are underway for the upcoming Local Council Elections under the guidance of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

The MP said the upcoming Local Council Elections are being held following amendments to the law that grant greater authority and responsibility to island councils.

He expressed confidence that the PNC would secure a strong victory in the Local Council Elections and the elections for Women’s Development Committees.
